INFERIOR takes place around 1088 in the transition between paganism and the Christian mission. It´s the story about Grim, a free man, and left in the pagan belief that lives with his family on a farm.
One day, the farm is suddenly attacked by a band of vikings who has become converted to the new religion of ”Vite Krist” (White Christ) , led by the charismatic but dangerous leader Joar.
Joar is in fact a fanatical and unscrupulous plunderer and murderer, making his ”Christian mission” an excuse for what is his true nature.
The Vikings slays the family but takes Grim as a slave and fighter in which he is forced to fight in various betting and entertainment purposes.
Grim suggests that he knows of a remote village where gold and silver has been deposit by himself and his vikings as once a free man, raiding in the far east some years ago. He pretends that he does not want to reveal the location but Joar offers a bargain and leading the band to the village and agree to being baptised, Grim will be granted freedom. A promise Grim takes lightly, knowing the true nature of Joar.
Grim is mysteriously accompanied by Odin himself and haunted by the ghosts of his wife and children. Odin, being able to speak to the dead explains that Fylja craves revenge or she will never leave Grim in peace. A fact Grim is all to familiar with. Even close family, not being buried in the right way can be a lethal threat so revenge is not only righteous but necessary and urgent.
Attracted by the story of the gold and controlled by Joars delusion of a direct connection with God, the men sails away on a journey to the alleged village through unknown and unfriendly landscapes.
In a barren, spooky and dreamlike enviorment the men is marching towards a devilish trap from which they soon discover, there is no turning back from.
Slowly, the band of men are falling to pieces, lured in to a dark and harsh unknown world reality is a far cry from certainty and dreams emerge far worse than any experiences on the battlefield.
The belief and promises of the hidden gold and silver starts to crack amongst the ragged and listless men and the idea of a ”Christian mission” is but an act played by Joar himself, wrapped up in a lonely, confused state of mind and in a constant rageful and strange dispute with God.
Decimated and on the edge, the men reaches the alleged village and as the end approaches, it occurs unexpectedly, abruptly, not least for those involved. That's when the hunters realize that they themselves are the quarry and that they never should have left their ship at all.
INFERIOR is a journey into the unknown, but also with the heritage from the Icelandic saga themes of cunningness, revenge, death, murder, ghosts and betrayal, and where Odin himself appears as a guide, spectator and cross shape. There is sometimes an act that hovers between dream and reality without clear boundaries and where the breakdown is constantly waiting around the next milestone and where the occult and the ghost emerges with symbolism, mysticism, sorcery and myth.
